Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine – Stronger in the Face of Current Security Challenges and in Implementation of Reforms

Chisinau, March 2, 2018 – Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine join forces to promote common defense and security policies, as well as to promote transformations that bring the three states closer to the European Union. The three Speakers of the Parliaments made the announcement at the joint press conference on the side of the High-Level Interparliamentary Conference “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and Current Security Challenges”.

“We decided to set up a trilateral union in the Eastern Partnership, an initiative that will make us stronger in the face of current security challenges and in implementation of reforms that will make us eligible to join the EU”, said the Speaker of Moldovan Parliament, Andrian Candu. He underscored that Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia are facing the same challenges, going through the same transformations and reforms, have common European aspirations, fight against corruption, energy dependence and other current risks and challenges. “We can learn from each other, but the most important thing is that together we can handle all challenges that we are facing”, mentioned Andrian Candu.

In their declaration for the press, Speakers of the Parliaments underscored that they agreed to promote a common agenda that will strengthen defense and security capacities of the three countries. They also decided to intensify cooperation in implementation of reforms that will make Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine eligible for joining European Union.

Today, Speakers of Georgian, Moldovan and Ukrainian Parliaments have signed a declaration through which they commit to promote common defense and security policies.

The conference, organized in partnership with the Atlantic Council on initiative of Speakers of Moldovan, Georgian and Ukrainian Parliaments, brings up issues related to information and energy security, defense, as well as ensuring sustainable economic growth and rule of law in the region. The event joins around 150 high-level officials and experts, including speakers of parliaments, members of European Parliament, representatives of US Congress, famous international and regional experts.

  Today the three Speakers will sign a joint declaration committing to unite efforts to promote common defense and security policies. 

Representatives of Parliaments, of the US Congress, members of European Parliament participate in the first High-Level Interparliamentary Security Conference, organized in Chisinau.  Well-known experts, Damon Wilson, Executive Vice President of the Atlantic Council, Anders Aslund, Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, John Herbst, Director of Eurasia Center, Ambassador Asif Chaudhry, Jonathan Eyal, Associate Director of RUSI, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, and other international and regional experts came to take part in the discussions.
