Energy as an Instrument of Pressure and Geopolitical Threat

Chisinău, March 2, 2018 – Gas became an instrument of pressure and an element of geopolitical threat of Russia in relation to other countries from the region, Ambassador John Herbst declared during the panel on energy security at the High-Level Interparliamentary Conference “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and Current Security Challenges”.

“It is only through diversification of energy market and single energy policy on the territory of the EU that the situation could change”, mentioned Herbst. According to him, it is vital to consolidate the European energy market.

Senator Titus Corlatean referred to the geopolitical support of Romania for European integration and energy security of Moldova. In context, the senator mentioned the projects for interconnection of gas pipelines and electricity networks.

  Timothy Fairbank, Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, underscored the importance of consolidating energy independence in the area and diversifying energy sources. In context, Agnia Grigas, expert, Atlantic Council, stated that the liquefied gas could be a real alternative for overcoming dependence on Russia. She particularly referred to the liquefied gas terminal in Croatia, which is to be launched soon.

Natalia Katser-Buchkovska, member of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and Irena Degutiene, Deputy Speaker of Lithuanian Seimas, shared the experience of their countries in energy diversification. 

The conference, organized in partnership with the Atlantic Council on initiative of Speakers of Moldovan, Georgian and Ukrainian Parliaments, brings up issues related to information and energy security, defense, as well as ensuring sustainable economic growth and rule of law in the region. The event joins around 150 high-level officials and experts, including speakers of parliaments, members of European Parliament, representatives of US Congress, famous international and regional experts.

Today the three Speakers will sign a joint declaration committing to unite efforts to promote common defense and security policies. 

Representatives of Parliaments, of the US Congress, members of European Parliament participate in the first High-Level Interparliamentary Security Conference, organized in Chisinau.  Well-known experts, Damon Wilson, Executive Vice President of the Atlantic Council, Anders Aslund, Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, John Herbst, Director of Eurasia Center, Ambassador Asif Chaudhry, Jonathan Eyal, Associate Director of RUSI, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, and other international and regional experts came to take part in the discussions.
