Damon Wilson: Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine Need Support to Eliminate the Gray Area in the Region
Chisinau, March 2, 2018 –Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine need support to eliminate the gray area in the region, said Executive Vice president of the Atlantic Council, Damon Wilson, at the opening of the High-Level Interparliamentary Conference “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and Current Security Challenges”.
According to him, Atlantic Council understands that there is a frontier of freedom in this area, and the three countries need a common strategy to become integral parts of the European Union.
“Together with European and US partners we want to tackle challenges that we are facing. We have claims to Russia with regard to territorial integrity of Georgia”, said the Speaker of Georgian Parliament, Irakli Kobakhidze. He spoke about the aspirations of his country to join the EU and NATO, mentioning that the integrity of the country is only possible through consolidation of strategic security in the region, also with support of the EU and USA.
The Speaker of Supreme Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy said that Russia and Vladimir Putin personally are the greatest danger for the security of his country. “We need common strategic projects to counter Russian aggression. Today’s event is a good start to founding a regional security project, with support of European and American partners”.
The conference, organized in partnership with the Atlantic Council on initiative of Speakers of Moldovan, Georgian and Ukrainian Parliaments, brings up issues related to information and energy security, defense, as well as ensuring sustainable economic growth and rule of law in the region. The event joins around 150 high-level officials and experts, including speakers of parliaments, members of European Parliament, representatives of US Congress, famous international and regional experts.
Today the three Speakers will sign a joint declaration committing to unite efforts to promote common defense and security policies.
Representatives of Parliaments, of the US Congress, members of European Parliament participate in the first High-Level Interparliamentary Security Conference, organized in Chisinau. Well-known experts, Damon Wilson, Executive Vice President of the Atlantic Council, Anders Aslund, Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, John Herbst, Director of Eurasia Center, Ambassador Asif Chaudhry, Jonathan Eyal, Associate Director of RUSI, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, and other international and regional experts came to take part in the discussions.
