Andrian Candu: Moldova Is Not Claiming New Territories, Moldova is Claiming the Right to Matter
Chisinau, March 2, 2018 – Moldova is not claiming new territories, Moldova is claiming the right to matter, declared the Speaker of the Parliament, Andrian Candu, at the opening of the High-Level Interparliamentary Conference “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and Current Security Challenges”.
“Our goal is to build a state following the Western model”, said Andrian Candu. According to him, in recent years the government in Moldova committed to decisions that can protect people who live in this country. In this regard, the Speaker of the Parliament mentioned the anti-propaganda law and the project to diversify energy sources, the greatest since independence. In context, he specified that with regard to Russian Federation Moldova is only asking for a relationship based on mutual respect.
The Speaker talked about current security challenges, common for Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia, such as energy security, frozen conflicts, disinformation and fake news. Andrian Candu referred to the aspiration to join the European Union, which the three countries have, and to the reforms implemented, pursuant to the commitments towards foreign partners, but, first of all, to the benefit of the inhabitants of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine.
The conference, organized in partnership with the Atlantic Council on initiative of Speakers of Moldovan, Georgian and Ukrainian Parliaments, brings up issues related to information and energy security, defense, as well as ensuring sustainable economic growth and rule of law in the region. The event joins around 150 high-level officials and experts, including speakers of parliaments, members of European Parliament, representatives of US Congress, famous international and regional experts.
Today the three Speakers will sign a joint declaration committing to unite efforts to promote common defense and security policies.
Representatives of Parliaments, of the US Congress, members of European Parliament participate in the first High-Level Interparliamentary Security Conference, organized in Chisinau. Well-known experts, Damon Wilson, Executive Vice President of the Atlantic Council, Anders Aslund, Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, John Herbst, Director of Eurasia Center, Ambassador Asif Chaudhry, Jonathan Eyal, Associate Director of RUSI, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, and other international and regional experts came to take part in the discussions.
